Hi. Really daft question... when sending a fax to the US, to 408 969-xxxx, do I put a 1 in front of it to make it 1408 969-xxxx?

Don't you have to dial a country code ? Just use the speaker or a handset when dialing and you can tell if it's connecting or not.

The US country code is "1", but you probably need a "01" or "011" in front of it to get an international line.

Yes, and an 00 in front of that as the international outcode.
00 -- this is an international call
1 -- to the US
408 969-xxxx -- US domestic number
